We are seeking a creative and motivated postdoctoral researcher with interest and experience in time-resolved spectroscopy and nonlinear characterization of materials and devices. The selected individual will pursue research on the nonlinear properties of nanoscale and atomically thin devices and materials, including graphene, black phosphorus, transition metal dichalcogenides and heterostructures thereof. Responsibilities include proposing, implementing, and conducting innovative time-resolved nonlinear measurements to probe and understand the optical, electronic, plasmonic, and thermal properties of new materials and devices. You will be working closely with an interdisciplinary team of faculty, graduate students, and collaborators with shared expertise in physics, materials science, engineering, nanofabrication, and integrated optics, and will have access to state-of-the-art ultrafast laser facilities from that span the spectrum from UV to THz. You will be expected to train and advise graduate students, attend and present research at leading conferences, and publish your work in the open literature.
Essential skills and experience sought:
- PhD awarded (or expected) in Applied Physics, Engineering, Physics, Optics or related field
- Excellent communication skills (in writing and speaking)
- Prior experience in safe operation and use of high-power, tunable ultrafast laser systems
- Proficiency with ultrafast instrumentation (autocorrelators, spectrometers, etc.)
- Expertise in time-resolved optical measurements
- Computer-based data acquisition and experimental measurement automation (e.g., using Matlab, Python, LabVIEW, etc.)
Desirable skills include:
- Numerical modeling, design, and optimization of optical systems
- Processing and characterization of 2D materials
- Experience with near-field scanning microscopy techniques
- Experience with THz time-domain measurements and instrumentation

Prof. Thomas E. Murphy was named as one of 96 individuals among the newest class of 2017 OSA Fellows, for “sustained contributions to nonlinear, electro-optic, and ultrafast processes in nanoscale materials, integrated photonics, devices, and systems.” The OSA fellow citation was presented this week at CLEO 2017 in San Jose, CA.

Prof. Amir Ali Ahmadi (Princeton) was selected this year as one of only 126 individuals in the US to win an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship. Amir was an undergraduate researcher in our laboratory in 2005, and although he is currently studying operations research and financial engineering, as a Maryland undergraduate student he published a paper in the Journal of Lightwave Technology and presented his work at the Optical Fiber Communications conference.
Our paper entitled “Tunable Ultrafast Thermal Relaxation in Graphene Measured by Continuous-Wave Photomixing” was published this week in Phys. Rev. Lett. and was highlighted as an Editor’s Suggestion. Only about one in six PRL papers are so highlighted, based on work that is judged to be particularly important, interesting, and well written.
Welcome to Sai Kanth Dacha, who joined the lab in Spring 2017. Sai received his BTech in Engineering Physics from IIT Madras in 2016, and joined the Physics department at UMD in 2016.
